Crunchyroll Hime’s Cosplay Championship FAQ
CRUNCHYROLL-HIME’S COSPLAY CUP FAQ
Not at all! Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup is open to any fan with a V-CRX 2021 badge. All written submissions should be in English and all email correspondence with contestants will be in English. Soundtrack for finalist performances may be in other languages. However, due to certain restrictions, physical prizes may only be shipped to addresses in the US and Canada.
Yep! This year, we’re allowing both individual entrants and groups of up to five eligible competitors. That said, we still expect everyone to adhere to local health, safety, and social distancing guidelines. If our team identifies unsafe behavior, it will be grounds for disqualification.
Your Pitch Portfolio lets you go into more detail about your entry and shows your costume progress. Our team will use it to determine the finalists for the show. You don’t need to have your costume done at this point, but you should have started. We’d like a PDF with up to five 8.5” X 11” pages. It’s due by 11:59PM PDT June 06, 2021. After you complete your interest form (Individual or group), you’ll get a welcome email that includes a guide and sample template. We can’t wait to see your ideas!
Different from a Pitch Portfolio, it will only be created by our finalists and alternates. This document primarily lets our judges see the details of your costume and any performance notes you’d like to call out. Since we can’t judge construction in person, this portfolio should include detailed shots of your process, highlighting things you would in a traditional, in-person situation. We’d like a PDF with up to five 8.5” X 11” pages. It’s due by 11:59PM PDT July 25, 2021. Group entries may use up to ten pages. Instructions for submission will be emailed to finalists by our team.
Keep in mind that only the selected finalists and alternates will need to submit a video. Submitting a video before you’re named a finalist won’t be accepted.
Finalists will be permitted to record their sixty second video in their home, or in an area where it is safe to film according to local health, safety, and social distancing guidelines. Entries that ignore these guidelines will not be accepted. Finalists may use multiple cuts to better show their costume, but the entire performance should take place in one scene or location. Additionally, no excessive filters, deepfakes, green screen, chroma key effects, special effects, or motion graphics will be permitted. Only practical effects, props, and backgrounds will be allowed. Final video should be in full HD, 1920 px X 1080 px resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio in either .MOV or .MP4 format. Your final entry should be recorded horizontally. If you have any questions, please reach out to CRXCosplay@reedexpo.com before submitting.
Not at all! We’re asking for this to get an idea of your body of work in cosplay. We also realize many cosplay enthusiasts choose to build their cosplay skill more so than their following. Our team may also use your accounts to cross-check your skill level to help ensure fairness. In short, we don’t care about your followers, this is about your creativity!
No. You just need a V-CRX 2021 badge to participate. Contestants under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian’s permission and, if selected as a finalist, your parent or guardian will need to fill out the required forms should you win a prize.
We’d love to see you cosplay one of our shows or games, but it’s not required. This competition is for fan-created costumes based on anime and anime-inspired shows and games so, of course, anything under the Crunchyroll umbrella is fine. If you have any questions on whether your costume idea is appropriate for the show, please contact our team via email at CRXCosplay@reedexpo.com and we’ll reply as soon as we can.

No. This is a competition for fan-created costumes, so they should be at least 75% made by the entrant(s). Pre-made items like undergarments, wigs, and shoes are fine—as is help from a parent or member of your household. If you are selected as a finalist and we discover that your costume was bought or commissioned, it is grounds for disqualification. If you are allowed to compete, your will score a zero in the “construction” category (worth 1/3 of your total)
While we’d love to see new creations each year, we understand this might not be feasible due to the current environment. That said, if your costume is self-created according to the rules, it is fine to enter with it again. However, if your costume has won a major or best-in-category award in competition, you must tell us and change at least 40% of it in order to be eligible. If you have any questions or are unsure, please contact our team via email at CRXCosplay@reedexpo.com and we’ll reply as soon as we can.
Yes, you are absolutely welcome to submit your entry. In virtually all cases, you should select the “advanced” category.
This special prize is awarded to one participant whose outstanding organization and communication most exemplifies the spirit of the competition. We want to reward good citizenship, organization, and detail as well as skill. Through this, the winner shows an inherent potential for judging and, as a part of the prize, will be invited to be a part of the judging panel for the next Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup. This prize is open to all skill levels.
We realize it takes a lot of courage to start cosplaying—let alone perform in front of a crowd! This special prize recognizes emerging talent. It is open to participants in the Beginner and Intermediate categories. This prize is for the person that shows true potential in the world of cosplay. We can’t wait to see them become a true star!
These will be announced soon. Stay tuned!
We’re currently in the process of confirming judges, but there’s always the possibility we may have an opening. Please contact our team via email at CRXCosplay@reedexpo.com and we’ll reply as soon as we can.
